Meridia
On March 19, 2002, the consumer advocacy group, Public Citizen, asked the FDA to take the diet drug, meridia, off the market. The group contends that the drug has been linked to the deaths of more than 25 patients since it first hit the market in 1988. Most of these deaths appear to be related to cardiovascular problems experienced while taking the drug. Meridia was suspended in Italy in March of 2002 because of two cardiovascular deaths related to the drug. There have also been reports of deaths related to the use of meridia in Britain, and there have been 103 reports of serious adverse reactions from people taking the drug in France and Britain. The first meridia lawsuit was filed at the end of March 2002.
