ADCON
ADCON PRODUCTS
ADCON was the first adhesion barrier gel designed to inhibit this potentially complicating scar tissue formation. Postsurgical adhesions (scar tissue formation) after lumbar back surgery can cause recurrent back pain and impair function. However, on January 9, 2001, Gliatech Inc., the manufacturer of ADCON voluntarily discontinued the distribution of the product worldwide. Since then, Gliatech Inc., the manufacturer of ADCON products, plead guilty to Federal charges of providing false or incomplete information to the FDA concerning ADCON-L, the company's back surgery gel.
What was the purpose of ADCON products?
ADCON products are absorbable gels and solutions marketed and manufactured by Gliatech Inc. They were designed to inhibit postsurgical scarring and adhesions. Adhesions and scar tissue can cause recurrent pain, impaired function, and occasionally reoperation.
How was ADCON-L supposed to inhibit adhesion formation?
Gliatech Inc. claimed that ADCON-L "provided a barrier between the spinal cord and nerve roots and the surrounding muscle and bone".
How common is lumbar disc surgery?
800,000 people have lumbar disc surgery each year.
How many people have problems after having lumbar disc surgery?
Approximately 40% of people that have lumbar back surgery experience recurrent back pain.

Gliatech Inc. was also expanding to include the following products:

- ADCON-C for cardiac surgery
- ADCON-A for abdominal surgery
