OSHA cites and fines 2 Chicago companies for Asbestos Hazards

CHICAGO – The U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration has cited two Chicago companies, T2 G.C. LLC, which operates as T2 Construction, and Gramek Construction Inc. for failing to protect workers from asbestos hazards at a job site in May. T2 Construction faces proposed fines of $141,600 and Gramek Construction faces proposed fines of $138,600, for a combined total of $280,200. Read more

Death of 2 drilling company workers in Texas

OSHA announces interim rules on Whistleblower procedures

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration will publish interim final rules in the Nov. 3 Federal Register that revise the regulations governing whistleblower complaints filed under the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002. The act protects employees of publicly traded companies and their subsidiaries, and of certain other employers, from retaliation for reporting mail fraud, wire fraud, bank fraud, securities fraud, violations of SEC rules or regulations, or violations of any provision of federal law relating to fraud against shareholders. OSHA is requesting public comment on the interim final rule. Read more

Avandia Restricted

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced that it will significantly restrict the use of the diabetes drug Avandia (rosiglitazone) to patients with Type 2 diabetes who cannot control their diabetes on other medications. These new restrictions are in response to data that suggest an elevated risk of cardiovascular events, such as heart attack and stroke, in patients treated with Avandia. Read more

Shaquille O’Neal sued for privacy invasion and computer hacking

Shaquille O’Neal’s lawyer says he will file a motion Thursday to dismiss a lawsuit in which a former employee says the NBA star stole his personal information and attempted to frame him for using child porn.  Shawn Darling, who was O’Neal’s personal computer consultant, said the NBA center acted in retaliation because Darling had proof that O’Neal cheated on his wife with several women.  O’Neal’s Florida lawyer said he will file to dismiss the lawsuit claiming privacy invasion, racketeering and intentional infliction of emotional distress on the grounds that the suit has no basis in law.

DePuy ASR 100 Acetabular Implant, 48 mm – Class 2 Recall – 2010 data from the National Joint Registry (NJR) of England and Wales shows the five year revision rate for the ASR™ Hip Resurfacing System is approximately 12 percent and for the ASR™ XL Acetabular System is approximately 13 percent. These revision rates are across the entire size range. The risk for revision was highest with ASR head sizes below 50 mm in diameter and among female patients. Read more
